FTC endorsement guidance should shape creator briefs

The FTC explains disclosure expectations around endorsements and material connections, a practical issue for influencer content and customer stories.

What the FTC’s source says

The Federal Trade Commission’s endorsement guides explain that an endorsement must reflect the endorser’s honest experience and that material connections may need disclosure.

The agency’s questions and answers discuss influencers, employees, reviews, and disclosure clarity. The guidance does not establish that a disclosure cures a false or unsupported claim.

Put the requirements into production

Creative briefs should state what a creator may accurately describe, what evidence supports product claims, and what relationship or compensation needs to be disclosed.

Review the disclosure in the published format: where it appears, whether viewers can notice it, and whether it remains understandable across edits. A contract alone does not communicate the relationship to an audience.

Keep the audience’s interpretation central

Roaring Media’s practical interpretation is to preserve authentic creator voice while making commercial context and claim boundaries explicit. Content that misleads can undermine both the endorser and the brand.

The FTC resource is guidance, not tailored legal advice. Organizations should involve qualified counsel when campaign facts or applicable obligations require a specific interpretation.
