Make a map of the current estate
List page types, media, metadata, relationships, authors, localization, forms, and integrations. Identify content owners and look for duplicated pages, expired offers, unsupported claims, and items no one can confidently maintain.
Map each source field to a destination concept and document losses or transformations. A migration spreadsheet can expose hidden dependencies, but decisions should be validated with editors and developers who understand how the content is actually used.
Choose what not to migrate
Content that is outdated, duplicative, or disconnected from current business needs may not deserve a direct copy. Decide whether to rewrite, consolidate, redirect, archive, or remove it, and identify the approver for each choice.
Protect valuable URLs with a redirect plan and preserve necessary records for operational or legal reasons through the appropriate process. A clean publishing system is not a reason to discard information without accountable review.
Test with representative batches
Import a small but varied sample, then check rendering, links, relationships, metadata, accessibility, and authoring behavior. Resolve mapping issues before the full transfer rather than discovering them after editors have resumed publishing.
Custom CMS Platform scopes migration with modeling, redirects, integrations, QA, and enablement. A considered inventory reduces surprise and gives the team a clear basis for governing content after cutover.
