AI-assisted video needs provenance and a human claims review
NEWS / SOLUTION
NIST's AI framework offers a risk-management lens for teams considering generated or AI-modified campaign footage.
What NIST's framework contributes
NIST's AI Risk Management Framework organizes AI risk activities into Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. It is a voluntary framework intended to help organizations incorporate trustworthiness considerations into AI system design, development, use, and evaluation.
The framework does not prescribe one universal rule for synthetic video or certify a particular production tool. Its value for campaign teams is the structured reminder to identify foreseeable risks and assign responsibility before an asset enters a public workflow.
Map the risks in a creative pipeline
If a team uses generated imagery, voice, or altered footage, record what was changed, which source materials were used, and who approved the final representation. Consider rights, audience interpretation, factual claims, and whether a viewer could mistake a constructed scene for documentary evidence.
Measure the production process with checks that fit the risk: source verification, likeness permissions, factual review, and a human comparison of final frames against the approved brief. Keep review evidence with the asset rather than relying on an informal verbal assurance.
Treat the framework as a working process
For dynamic campaigns, governance means deciding which uses are acceptable, who can approve them, and what disclosures or restrictions may apply. A production tool's capabilities do not replace the organization's responsibility for the message it publishes.
NIST's framework offers a way to structure discussion, not a guarantee of safety or legal compliance. The agency interpretation is to preserve provenance and human review for every material variant, especially when synthetic elements could affect trust in an endorsement or demonstration.
