A video cutdown does not cut down the responsibility for an endorsement

NEWS / SOLUTION

FTC endorsement guidance is a practical review reference when creator clips become shorter campaign variants.

A video cutdown does not cut down the responsibility for an endorsement

What the FTC guidance says

The FTC's Endorsement Guides resource explains that endorsements must reflect honest opinions and that material connections may need clear and conspicuous disclosure when audiences would not expect them. It also addresses advertisers' responsibility for endorsements.

A creator's statement can remain an endorsement after it is edited into a shorter ad. The guidance concerns the truthfulness and disclosure context of the claim; it does not say that a platform label or a full-length original automatically resolves every placement.

Review the claim in its new edit

A cutdown may remove the speaker's qualification, context, or disclosure while leaving a strong product claim. Review the assembled version from beginning to end and confirm the edited words still represent the endorser's experience and the advertiser's substantiation.

Keep disclosure visible in each destination format and verify it on a phone-sized screen. A line placed beyond a crop or buried under interface controls may not be clear to the audience the asset reaches.

Make compliance travel with the asset

The agency interpretation is to attach the relationship, rights, disclosure, and approved-claim notes to the source footage and every derivative. Require a reviewer to sign off on each materially different edit before distribution.

FTC guidance is not a case-specific legal opinion, but it gives production teams a grounded checklist for responsible adaptation. A Dynamic Video Campaign should scale creative learning without scaling an endorsement context that has been stripped away.
