WCAG’s Caption Criterion Is Relevant to Social Video Production
NEWS / SOLUTION
W3C specifies captions for prerecorded synchronized media; social teams should plan caption quality and format before publishing.
What the criterion requires
WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.2.2, Captions (Prerecorded), is a Level A criterion for prerecorded synchronized media, with exceptions described in the standard. Captions convey speech and relevant non-speech audio.
The criterion is part of a broader accessibility standard; a caption file alone does not establish that an entire social experience conforms. Teams need to consider the complete content and applicable context.
Make captions part of the creative
For social video, caption review should include accurate transcription, speaker identification when needed, meaningful sound cues, timing, legibility, and placement. Automated text should be checked for names, jargon, and edits that change context.
Choose the delivery format for the destination. Some workflows support caption files; others may need visible captions in the rendered creative. Preview the result on a phone and ensure text does not obscure important action.
Build a repeatable publishing check
Social Content Studio can include caption format and editorial review in its production guidance. Assign an owner, confirm the final export, and verify that captions remain available when the asset is adapted for another channel.
The practical interpretation is to treat accessibility as part of the content’s craft and quality assurance. WCAG provides a clear reference for one aspect of access, while channel-specific needs and applicable obligations may require further review.
