NIST’s AI Risk Framework Gives Marketing Leaders a Governance Vocabulary

NEWS / SERVICE

NIST frames AI risk management as a lifecycle practice, offering marketing executives a way to ask better questions before adoption.

NIST’s AI Risk Framework Gives Marketing Leaders a Governance Vocabulary

What NIST’s framework provides

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary resource intended to help organizations incorporate trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI systems. Its core functions are Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage.

NIST presents a framework, not a certification or a guarantee that following its terminology eliminates risk. Teams still need to assess the particular system, data, context, and obligations relevant to their use.

Apply the vocabulary to marketing work

A marketing leader can use those functions to structure a practical review: who is accountable, what task and people are affected, what risks can be measured, and how a team responds when the system fails or produces unsuitable output.

For instance, using generative tools for campaign drafts raises different review questions from routing customer requests or processing sensitive information. A policy should distinguish those uses instead of approving “AI” as a single undifferentiated category.

Make governance part of the operating plan

A Mobile CMO can convene marketing, operations, and technical owners to define permitted uses, review checkpoints, and escalation responsibilities. The framework helps make those conversations concrete without pretending the agency can certify a client’s compliance.

The practical point is to include risk ownership beside channel budgets and objectives. Adoption should follow a documented business need, an accountable human process, and a way to monitor whether the tool remains appropriate as workflows change.
